LFL L LFG C RFG R RFL *** *** *** *** *** *** *** DISTANCE: 360 375 395 420 395 375 360 HEIGHT: 8 8 8 30 8 8 8 SURFACE: Natural Grass FOUL TERRITORY: Small The Colt .45's (as the Astros were originally known), had hoped to begin their history in the Harris County Domed Stadium (Astrodome), but when the start of the vast project was delayed, a temporary outdoor park (Colt Stadium), was built for them next door in time for their 1962 inaugural. It was after the Houston team moved into the Astrodome, that the team changed it's name, from the Colt .45's to the Astros. Heat, humidity, and giant mosquitoes held Colt home attendance below a million in each of their three outdoor seasons. In 1962 and 1963 the seating capacity for the park was 32,601. Despite the low attendance, further seats were added prior to the 1964 season bringing the seating capacity up to 33,010. Although it was 420 feet to straight away centerfield, the deepest part of the park was 427 feet, in the corners just to the right and left of centerfield. The last Major League game played in Colt Stadium was in 1964. Colt Stadium was dismantled in the 1970s and moved to Gomez Palacio in Mexico where it became home to a Mexican League baseball team.
